For anyone interested in a more practical alternative, I recommend checking out the XTEInk X4. Its firmware is open-source and there are already a couple custom community firmwares. Been really enjoying it as a pocketable option. Also less than $100.

Unless Xteink have opened the firmware and I’m not caught the news, no. However, there are several open source firmwares but the most popular is CrossPoint, https://github.com/crosspoint-reader/crosspoint-reader

I never even tried the stock firmware. Been with CrossPoint since I got the device.
