Baseball Tape worked well for me, Lizard Tape specifically, super good for cheek weld. I tried a few types of Hockey Tape and Goon Tape, and none of 'em got quite got the sheer grippy action of Lizard Tape.
Haven't gotten it muddy or terribly dirty yet, just some rain. Worked well and maintained grippy. Supposedly Lizard Tape is good for that.

In all seriousness, yeah. There's a few products made specifically for it, "Goon Tape," which is basically hockey tape with a bit more friction, but hockey tape works fine too. I added Baseball Tape, "Lizard Tape" brand, because I wanted even more friction. Specifically, I added Baseball Tape down the length, and hockey taped the ends so it doesn't peel up.
I'm an individual that currently has a rather sizeable beard. Oftentimes, dry cheek skin and hair makes it difficult for me to keep my cheek weld, but this has done a number on making it easier for me.
It's also worth noting, Hockey/Goon tape works real well on grips, handles, magazines, and just generally anywhere that a bit of firm padding or grip can be useful. I basically layered these spots with it, and it doesnt mind the heat from the barrel at all.

does it make more damage or just looking cool?

The tl;dr: is It helps you keep your cheek weld and eases ergonomics. I don't care a whole lot for visuals when most used AR15s usually look scuffed up as balls on the surface.
Edit: As for other locations, it helps with grip and ergonomics there too. I wrapped an angled grip with it, and it feels much nicer now.

i don't know why the use of grippy offends me but i am terribly offended
it is grip tape used by grips not because it is grippy
the tape should be capable of being removed leaving zero marks behind once removed because grips tape everything down onto everything on set for film and tv thus grip tape

I feel like you might have some confusion about grip tape here
This is tape you'd wrap around the handle of something like a baseball bat or hockey stick because it is in fact grippy
The tape you're talking about, that's used by grips and other film crews and stagehands and such I've always heard called "gaffer tape"

Thats gaffer tape.
