He doesn't threaten to destroy the spice until the end of the second if we want to call it that

I don't know about the OP, but the first two movies are made from the first book, so perhaps that's where the confusion is from?

Yeah, I'm probably being to pedantic too, controlling the spice is a theme from the start.
