why do they always focus on micay's behavior instead of the project itself?

Because that's all that gossiping hairdressers understand.

It feels more like a disinformation campaign to me

Both things can be true.

Because the public appearance, like the way they attack everything and everone on mastodon and other places is the first thing, many potential users see from GrapheneOS. If I saw their tweets back when deciding what OS to use I would not have trusted them.

After using GrapheneOS for many years, I understand that his "abrasive public appearance" doesnt reflect in the implementation of GrapheneOS, but new users don't have that trust.

Hasn't effected yet. The person clearly has issues and they could get worse. I use it but dont trust it well be the same and around for a long time no. I mean one of the reasons I tried it is they made a show of him stepping away and here we are he actually didnt.

there seems to be this bizarre political corollary with this and the rightest politics that helped get trump elected: the republicans laundered fascist/imperialist policies through legacy & social media to make it seem more palatable to centrist/moderate voters and it worked as you just described it did with graphene.

it's troubling to me that surface level appearance/understanding of something matters more than its substance.

WIRED hasn't been worth wiping your ass with for 20+ years. So, no big surprise here.
