Why is Substack good for "audience discovery" and how it compares with self-hosted solutions and/or Ghost Pro

I've heard that Substack excels at what some people call "audience discovery". I wonder how that works. I also don't want to use Substack because of its Nazi problem.

I had a look at Ghost Pro, and I understand it is a blogging CMS combined with a mailing list solution. But it seems you pay extra for the latter if you self-host.

Long story short, I am considering blogging and I research privacy-respecting, self-hostable solutions, but I am afraid I will miss out on growth if I go the self-hostable way. After all, all these people out there, professional journalists included, prefer a managed solution, so they might know something more.

Any input is welcome.

Substack is literally promoting sex traffickers and Nazis. There's even add-ons to filter it's links or to alternatives so they don't get money but you can read it's content like https://jasoncosper.com/kill-yr-substack/

Thanks for the tip, but I would appreciate if you actually read the post. TL;DR I do mention its Nazi issue.

I know it is on there but personally, I have yet to see see it myself. Have been using Substack for quite a while now and have not seen it at all. All I come across are the things I’m interest it and the users I follow.

That said, almost every platform has this particular issue.

Unfortunately, I can’t help because I’m not someone who blogs. I’m a person who (quietly) follow blogs.

Like most substacks, you won't just run across the Nazi ones unless you have a link or search for them. The problem with Substack the company is that not only are they allowing Nazis there but they are profiting off of hosting Nazi content.

This I did not know. Really sad to hear and read, I started to like Substack because I finally found a place where I could read things I'm interested in without other stuff bloating my feed.
