Scientists have discovered that many plants emit faint ultrasonic clicks when distressed.

Such a stupid campaign to emotionalize this finding.
Yes, plants produce sounds that correlate to all kinds of things about the plant, but it "screems" just as much as my anus "screems" when I fart.
These are sounds produced by the internal mechanisms of the plant (water movement, growth, etc) quite similar to how farts are sounds produced by the internal mechanisms of my bowls.
Just like farts, there is a lot to learn about someone if you analyze them properly. and just like farts these sounds are not screams, intentional, or a type of communication.

Such a silly argument. Do you seriously believe that both a potato and a pig interact with the world in the same way? Plants don't have nerve endings nor a brain to procress such information. Calling this reaction "pain" flies in the face of every biological study in existence.
But OP doesn't care, probably only read the headline and thought they had a gotcha.

Wow, we are just repeating studies from the 60s now, but with more emotive language: https://doi.org/10.1007/BF00380209
