I like how they say "I hope you are managing" but omits the "well", because they know that just managing it (even if it's poorly) is good enough.

As someone managing it poorly, I suspect it's more about managing it well being so unlikely that it would change the tone from politely sympathetic to mocking. Not to be sensitive or anything. I'm managing poorly.
