Toph went around shoeless because she was blind and sensed vibrations to "see," not because she was an earthbender.

Earthbenders wouldn't need heels.

Counter: not every citizen of Ba Sing We is an earthbender.

I really think avatar should have done a little more to show life for non benders.

We get a little bit here and there, but never really see "normal people who have to be on their toes around benders" kind of life outside of the single western lone-wanderer episode where Zuko left Iroh and was helped by an earth kingdom family, who then all turn on him when they find out he's a fire bender for sure, claiming to be prince of the fire nation.

Damn that is a good episode...

But Imagine being a normal person going about your life when BAM half your house is gone because a teenager still wrangling with his abilities accidentally shot a boulder (not THE Boulder) through your front wall. Are the cops gonna do anything about it? Or are they gonna shrug and tell you they don't have any benders on their payroll so nobody wants to risk getting sunk through the floor.

Wasn't that like... A whole thing in Korra?

Ehhh, kinda? There was a group of non-benders who saw benders as oppressive. But their leader was secretly a water bender who was basically using them, and they're mostly just portrayed as "Crazed revolutionaries who are going too far!"

You weren't really encouraged to empathize with them or see the world from their point of view.

[off topic]

Marvel comics did a comic "Marvels."

Told from the POV of a normal New Yorker who lived through the 1940's and into the 1970's.

Now you have conjured a vision in my mind of an earthbender who dynamically raises small platforms under their feet in such a way that it simulates high heels. At least I think that would be cool as hell.

Indeed.

What about the war though

Jhex@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 130d (1 reply)

There is no war in Ba Sing Sei

Sadly there is afaik also no bar in Ba Sing Sei.

A good claim would be though: „There is no car in Ba Sing Sei“

Counterpoint, maybe the heel part is made of an alloy perfectly designed for bending, so an undercover metalbender always has access to a weapon.

Hunh. Didn't know Leia was from Ba Sing Se.
