I was too poor to afford PPV back when they actually where pay-per-view, but did they have ads then too?

After a quick search it looks like SummerSlam 2011 might have been the first PPV that had commercials play for something outside of WWE. Before that they'd play ads for up coming shows and movies starring wrestlers. But night one of Mania is the first time I remember people comparing the total match length to total time spent watching ads. I want to say it was like 60 minutes of commercials compared to 100 minutes of actual wrestling.
