That hack fraud Jim Davis wishes he could write such an engaging comic.

Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world · 102 pts · 87d (14 replies)

I actually watched a youtube video years ago. Before Garfield he tried to be edgy in his comics, and found it hard to make a living.

This was in the 70s. Newspapers didn't want his edgy comics. So he went back and tried to make the most bland, boring, cringy comic he could with intentionally lame jokes.

Newspapers ate it up in the 80s, and it was a hit. So he made a new rule. No good writing allowed in Garfield. Make it as bland as possible to appeal to boring people.

And thats why he's either a millionaire, or a billionaire today.

didn't peanuts start edgy? and popeye? and nancy? and archie?

Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world · 25 pts · 87d (5 replies)

Archie's always been edgy. I've seen a comic where one of them wore a gimp mask and leather underwear, while Veronica wore a corset, and held one of those stick whips, and said "Boys make good pets".

How much edgier do you want it???

bizarroland@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 87d (1 reply)

I mean, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was pretty fucking edgy when it first came out in comic books.

They were more like turtle assassins than goofy teenagers looking for pizza

Kids just don't get the right role models anymore...

lime@feddit.nu · 6 pts · 87d (1 reply)

how bad was davis' stuff then?!

SculptusPoe@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 87d

I'm sure the s&m didn't make it into the daily newspapers. I grew up reading Gary Larson's compilations and his descriptions of censorship for strange reasons. If gimp Archie made it in, nothing makes sense.

Remember when he, at least allegedly, tried to end the comic? In my memory it feels pretty tame but at the age I was at the time it felt pretty edgy.

Sounds like the dilbert guy too. Americans are the dumbest people (im also american)

Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world · 27 pts · 87d (1 reply)

Well......the dilbert guy was also a homophobic transphobic fascist. So I try not to think about him too much.

HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 87d

Why not? He's spitroasting in Hell. I don't believe in it but he did so pthbt it happened in that one last dmt fueled moment in his mind.

Zorque@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 87d (1 reply)

Just because Newspapers didn't want it doesn't mean people didn't want it. Corporations intentionally bland up their products to appeal to the most people possible. Just look at the colors of bed linens that are commonly available, or car colors, or JJ Abrams movies. All intentionally blanded up to appeal to the widest demographic without even the possibility of offense.

5too@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 86d

I wonder how that might have impacted our diet... American cuisine in general is often considered bland and tasteless, even though some specific foods of ours are very well regarded. Maybe because we've been sold food targeting the broadest market possible for decades, impacting our cultural flavors?

UnspecificGravity@piefed.social · 17 pts · 87d (3 replies)

Don't lie. If you could turn being bland and dull into a billion dollars you would do it to.

CluckN@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 87d (2 replies)

Bland and Dull is what I have tattooed on my knuckles, and buddy am I raring to make a sandwich.

TheGoldenV@lemmy.world · 7 pts · 87d (1 reply)

So is the D on your thumb or do you hold it in your hand?

Test_Tickles@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 86d

My first thought was that he doubled up with the l. Like "bl a n d" or "b la n d", but I have to admit that I like your ideas better.

Although, now that I think about it for a bit longer, I really feel like if you are going to tattoo the word bland, and use the double letter style, the double letter needs to be the n and d on the pinky finger: "b l a nd". With the 2 letters squeezed together and kind of trailing off and down the finger.

Garfield is a hybrid gluttony and sloth demon and I will not abide this slanderous misidentification.

rainwall@piefed.social · 7 pts · 87d (1 reply)

Objection!!!

You can be a fat, lazy fuck. That means gluttony, sloth and lust are all compatible your honor.

Etterra@discuss.online · 1 pts · 86d

You haven't presented any evidence of lust in the character. It's not even clear if he's neutered or not.

Does Garfield pass the Harkness test? Its for sure 2/3, just the debate of speaking vs thought bubbles.

toynbee@piefed.social · 1 pts · 86d

I initially missed that Jon greeted Liz and wondered whether it was Lyman calling. Liz makes more sense but for some reason I find the Lyman option more entertaining.
