I still see a lot of ai generated images on DDG no ai.

My expectation for it is simply that DDG isn't running any AI to give me an overview/summary, and instead just giving me links to relevant sites. It's not DDG fault if sites hosting content don't clearly mark that the content was AI generated. Is there even a standard for sites to convey that to search engine indexers?

Some AI images contain metadata indicating their AI-y-ness. Bare minimum from a search engine would be to filter common tags and block any known AI "galleries".

IDK where DDG is at in the AI image arms race though.

i mean yeah, they don't magically know if it's AI or not, that's why you can flag images.
I certainly prefer that over them using another AI model to identify AI images..

I love DDG, mostly because you can tell it's a company that's actually trying to be what its users want. No AI? Fine. No JS? Also fine. Want to use POST instead of GET so your search queries don't show up in your browsing history? You can even do that.

For the longest time, tech companies have had that attitude they should be able to dictate how you use their service, rather than providing the kind of service that you, the user, want.

It's refreshing at least one company that's finally bucking that trend.

right? i don't --like-- actually think they're a good company, because clearly they don't care about the ethical implications of AI use, but i'll fucking applaud them for having the nobel prize-worthy intelligence and patience to not repeatedly stab themselves in the stomach.

Kagi if you're willing to pay (to an American company) for really high quality search results, e.g. for deep technical or scientific work

Startpage gives a good search experience; it uses Google's index. I've read that they're owned by an ad company though, casting doubt on their privacy claims

Qwant is also liked by a decent number of people, but I think there are issues about the behavior of the company behind it

Kagi has been my go to for a while now.
DDG is among the best in my opinion.

I’m not anti-AI, but I’m against it in everything all the time even when I didn’t want or need it.

Brave's owners are assholes but their search is good.

Kagi is the best, especially for pruning AI slop, but $$.

You can also roll your own SearXNG if you're savvy.

Hot take, no ai still has a bunch of shitty cheap AI articles for some searchses and don't care generating a response for my random niche questions.
