Star != Planet

darkdemize@sh.itjust.works · 87 pts · 61d (4 replies)

Right? Shouldn't it be something like JESSICA'S THICC BOOTY 4?

Cypher@aussie.zone · 46 pts · 61d

A misunderstanding on the Aliens part, their planet being second from their star is actually Jessica’s swampy taint.

ZoteTheMighty@lemmy.zip · 17 pts · 61d

JESSICA'S THICK BOOTY b or JESSICA'S THICK BOOTY c probably.

Jessica’s Thick Booty Prime

I could see an advanced civilization with lots of habitable planets having a naming convention of star name then planet number. So we'd be Sun-3. Or if we rename the sun to Earth, we'd be Earth-3, called "Earth" for short. In English, our planet name literally means dirt. 😞

Benign@fedia.io · 16 pts · 61d

Dirt is great. Have you seen the other planets in our system?

Also one of them is called Uranus. Dirt is great.

"An advanced civilization"?

Sure, try typing "Sol-3" and "Sol-3a" into wikipedia.

tacosanonymous@mander.xyz · 6 pts · 61d

Ideally, you’d organize it like the animal kingdom or something. Very detailed and perhaps giving at least a hint to its location. Then you’d have a colloquial name for it.

Hadriscus@jlai.lu · 6 pts · 60d

That's all (?) indoeuropean languages I think

alanjaow@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 61d

I love the cataloging aspect. Maybe official names like those, plus imaginative names from whoever lives on it, or whoever discovered it.

In Japanese, the common word for star, "hoshi" also refers to planets. So, clearly, this comic was translated from Japanese.

ParlimentOfDoom@piefed.zip · 10 pts · 60d (1 reply)

That seems like a poor choice on their part

randint@lemmy.frozeninferno.xyz · 4 pts · 60d

Just writing this for people who'd want to know: hoshi (星) is the daily, common word used to refer to stars and planets. This is the most common word that someone would use to refer to a star. However, for science, more precise terms do exist: wakusei (惑星) for "planets" and kousei (恒星) for "stars".

Illogicalbit@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 60d

Exactly, they might be from the “booty” system now, but there’s no need to rename the planet. That would just be confusing.

Ahah, go tell that to all the chinese cultivation manga folks.

Very Rick and Morty.

Dr Who did this bit

Hupf@feddit.org · 2 pts · 60d

Wait until Stormageddon, Dark Lord of All hears about this

Maultasche@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 60d

Wasn't that a plot in the last series of Doctor Who?
