Or she can keep giving Washington what it wants: more arrests, more extraditions, more cooperation and ever-higher-profile political targets. That might buy time with Mr. Trump, but it would let the United States define the terms of Mexico’s fight against cartel power. Ms. Sheinbaum would look less like a president asserting control than a leader enforcing accountability on Washington’s terms.

But Ms. Sheinbaum can still take charge of this moment. She could use U.S. pressure as leverage to start serious anticorruption investigations, remove compromised officials, disrupt local protection networks and force her party to accept changes it might otherwise resist. She could work to reform Mexico’s security and justice apparatus, rebuild cooperation with Washington from a position of strength and reassert her government’s role as a domestic enforcer of the rule of law. Not because the United States demands it, but because Mexicans need it.

Kinda sounds to me like NYT wants her to do what Trump wants but do it by herself.

Now i'm not going to say that fighting the cartel isn't good. But it could unchain a massive civil war, which might be even more devastating than the cartels itself right. It could put Mexico into a precarious position to be easily dominated by US divide-and-conquer strategies.

Cartels already have many US weapons and dealings with the CIA. I'm sure the CIA is willing to pour some oil on that fire as always. Let two parties destroy eachother and then sweep in to claim the spoils after everything has burned down. Sheinbaum is walking a fine tightrope and at least she's lifting some Mexicans out of poverty, which in turn will also weaken the cartels.
