Explanation: In Greek mythology, Sisyphus was punished by the gods by being forced to endlessly roll a boulder up a mountainside, and then, once the boulder reaches the top, having it roll all the way back down. For that reason, "Sisyphean" is used to mean an endless or uncompletable task, especially a repetitive one.
I sure hope he's done with his reps soon, I need to hit the boulder before the gym closes...
If I am not mistaken he never reaches the top. Instead the rock is enchanted to roll down on it's own just before Sisyphus can get to the peak of the hill.
Reason: Waiting for delivery at the top at that hill. The ticket #325423 as been in charge of Sisyphus for ages! That rock is necessary for completion.
IMO this story demonstrates how times have changed as it’s suppose to be an agonizing punishment.
Through our modern eyes, it’s honestly no different to the banality of modern life in which we are all doing mindless tasks which seem endless and futile in the grand scheme of things.
What I like about this meme in particular is that the comparison with weight lifting points out that physical futile tasks is actually enjoyable compared to a mental one given how working out is a hobby for many.
TLDR: the past sucked but they have nothing on our more advanced man made horrors
