His first movie was actually about depression-era European Jews trying to make or sell furniture--it's been a while.. They guy's got chops, is what I'm saying.

It reminds me a little bit of Lewis Black. He spent a year writing a screenplay and got like a hundred bucks for it; realizing he made more doing stand up in one night, he abandoned script writing and did comedy instead.
