Researchers have studied possible links between ALS and factors such as injury or physical activity, but no confirmed cause has been found for most cases.

According to the article he’s not blaming it on football, and there’s no confirmed link between the two. It’s not a TBI thing in this case.

There's no confirmed cause, but there is a higher rate of ALS among professional football players. I don't have a link to the study on hand, but it points to the possibility that high contact sports may put one at more risk for ALS.
