The GOP would have no one to run if that bill passed so they killed it.

Probably for the best. When people think "registered sex offender" they think "dangerously crazy person" but there are ways to commit a "sex crime" that are not as serious, and it's possible for people who were deservedly registered to reform.

It's like blanket rules against felons. A felony ranges pretty significantly from trying to pass a bad check all the way to murder. Being a "registered sex offender" could just mean that the person tried to patron a sex worker, it doesn't necessarily mean that they committed a violent or egregious offense.
