Sometimes the IDs on iNaturalist feel like:"There are four kinds of ants. If it's a black ant and little it's niger. Lasius niger is Brittish, but if the ant has an American accent then it's neoniger. If it's big it's Camponotus pennsylvanicus. If it's red and angry it's Solenopsis invicta if it's larger, red and not angry then it's a pogo.":/I mean... I get it. But, there are so many other ants.

That was how this encounter felt.

(The pavement ants did not like me shining a photography light in their nest.)

Brown ants on a rock near the entrance to their nest. These are tiny ants but it's a macro photo and you can see their mandibles are wide open.
