Tbf it was generally better towards the beginning as far as material conditions and treatment go. It got way worse with time. Indentured servitude and roman style slavery turned into chattel slavery and institutionalized racism. The British held a much tighter leash over the southern colonies than the wimpy federalist government ever could.
