When they arrive and depart the plane they will be welcomed to the Russian army and handed a 150 year old pistol with no ammo and told to charge the enemy. They'll all drown of course.

I dunno how much morale-boosting the Kremlin is doing for its military if it's shipping them to an area that's substantially severed from a logistical standpoint and lacks fuel and electricity.

It might be a desertion prevention setup. If a frontline soldier goes on vacation to his family in a remote region of Russia, then hiding from the state is going to be relatively easy if he wants to. But if he can only go on vacation to Crimea, then there's far less chance of escape.
