You'd have to be a pretty shit electrical engineer to think you could short out a socket in a jail cell with non-conductive glasses frames and cause the cell door to unlock.
A) An electrical engineer should have a pretty good idea of what is and isn't conductive, and should probably be able to tell the frames won't work just by looking at them.
B) Unless the jail was designed by an equally shit electrical engineer, the cell locks would certainly be on a different circuit than the cell power outlets and/or lights.
C) Unless the lock designer was an equally shit mechanical engineer, the cell locks should be designed to 'fail closed' during any power outage (hopefully with a manual override allowing guards to evacuate prisoners in an emergency). So even if it did cause a power failure for the cell door lock, it would probably still remain locked.
D) Unless the prison designer was shit at his job as well, one unlocked cell door does not a prison escape make. The entire cell block should also be in a secure area that prisoners can't just walk out of.
But, hey... I guess people get desperate and crazy sometimes and will just try all sorts of things, hoping something will work.
(Something similar could maybe work -- if the cell has a power outlet and you can find something reasonably conductive, you could use it to start a fire. And then the fire would hopefully trigger fire alarms and result in an emergency evacuation. And, hopefully, during the chaos of an evacuation, you might be able to find an opening to escape.)

Well he was schizophrenic so I'm sure that player a role in his poor jail break decisions
