Some professions that were traditionally male dominated and were also called "____ man" can be made gender neutral by replacing "man" with "person."

This does not work for "garbage man."

Garbage collector works fine though.

I'm partial to fireman to fire fighter, so mailman to mail fighter, policeman to police fighter, etc.

hayvan@piefed.world · 23 pts · 56d

Garbage fighter nicely fits that pattern too.

baguettefish@discuss.tchncs.de · 13 pts · 56d (1 reply)

i thought police fighting is what antifascists do

prettybunnys@piefed.social · 5 pts · 56d

Well only because the police are fascist and anyone who is anti fascist is antifascist

fushuan@piefed.blahaj.zone · 2 pts · 56d

Policeman already has cop or dog, your pick.

Garbage person. A job I'm overqualified for

tanisnikana@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 56d

Garbagefighter! Goes well with firefighter, mailfighter, salesfighter, congressfighter, fishfighter, barfighter, ombudsfighter.

Sadbutdru@sopuli.xyz · 4 pts · 56d

I find "workers" is a pretty good all-purpose one.

wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz · 3 pts · 55d

Das Mann means the person and is gender neutral, the English word "man" which comes from it also has a gender neutral sense. It's more archaic, but it does exist

JoeBigelow@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 55d

Right? I mean I'm not employed by any sort of waste management service and I am certainly a garbage person.

"." is one of those that you take for granted until you read stuff like this. At least it had "," this time.

I can 100% imagine someone delivering it as written. After each like there's a pause just long enough for you to interrupt each other.
