I'm in the leadership role for a "extra small" dsa chapter. ask me anything

this is my more serious post that i want to talk about and i want to help out various communities to help engagement.

so i got into a leadership position for Pensacola democratic socialist of america after 4 months of being an member and 6 month of interacting with them and i have been in leadership since march. I dont consider it like that big of an accomplishment that im in leadership, im just the guy that just has responsibilities and should put out fires.

if you want to get into leadership into a chapter in a chapter its not that hard.

Is everyone as unconsciously racist as they are in my chapter full of white 20-something liberals with rich parents?

solidheron@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 34d (7 replies)

I doubt they're racist, I don't confront people on race issues or even bring up race issues since I do identify as Anglo Saxon.

I wouldn't describe everyone as rich 20 somethings. There are members that been activist for over 30 years, good bit of people in their 30s and young chapters. We do have a "that guy" in the chapter

Ironically I'm more likely to talk like rich winger than any of them, but I love talking to maga 🤣

You don't bring up race issues because you're white and you say "I identify as Anglo Saxon"? I would offer to you that you have some work to do in deepening your understanding of race, racism, and whiteness. I would recommend to you a great podcast: Scene on Radio, seasons 1 through 3 seasons 2 and 3

I don't identify as white and I'm objectively the descendants of Anglo Saxon an actual tribe of people. Damn 3 whole seasons of a podcast I mean come on

Yeah, I think it's worth listening to. They're short and easy to consume episodes. Very This American Life style production. Very accessible. Give it a whirl.

Are you worried about your safety? Do you have a "go bag"?

I myself am not that much of a student of history, but I am aware how the US has killed or supported the killing of democratic socialists in many other countries (see this this thread for a critical take). I personally can't imagine it either but logically it seems quite possible that there will soon be a massacre and brutal persecution in the US.

Being in a red area. Yes. It's like a buffer from the feds. Trump gutted the government so they're not as efficient as they used to be and they weren't that efficient.

I don't have a go bag.

Yeah I've accepted my death. I should apply pressure on the government and hope people join in

Nice work being involved!

Few questions if you may:

  1. Did you find yourself needing to build a lot of social capital for this role? How much does the job require favors and such?
  2. What are the time commitments like? Can you and any helpers you have do this while having full time jobs?
  3. Do you need to give speeches and facilitate?
  4. Can you give some general idea of what fires one may put out?

  1. I want to say no, but a better answer is that I very efficient at getting social capital. I went to protests, helped out other members, went to socials and introduced myself, I try to be everyone's ally. I do know it's next to impossible for anyone to attack me socially because of how much I've done.

The job isn't really that hard rn. At first I was busy helping with other projects then I got a video game addiction and everyone went in vacation, but my official duties are easy, but require me to speak publicly and pick up roles that I don't think I "have the altitude for". If other people do more then I'll have more to do.

  1. I'm better at supporting people than heading my own projects. I resell stuff as a hustle and. I don't need helpers since I tend to be the help
  2. Yes I give speeches at public hearing and meetins, I have facilitated 2 meetings. Speaking is just useful because you'll want to get your ideas out there. You'll want feedback, I want feedback. Also ask for help. I think I'm a decent facilitator. It helps to take notes while people talk to help you pay attention
  3. So one set of fires is responsing to national, having enough officer present, dealing with resignations, technically I can say grievance process and how to deal with issues, also we fell behind on application for the chapter

Thank you for the answers! Sounds like great experience and a nice chance to actually give back.

Hope it goes well 😇 Appreciate all your efforts.
