I literally say when the shit with Venezuela started that a ton of "leftists" as in "left wing politics" or people still fans of Obama - they supported the US action against Venezuela. How does that make sense if they do not think the US is still a democratic country. If you think your country isn't "A" and accuses another country of not being "A" you'd call it hypocritical and not believe it. But they did.

There is a serious disconnect there, and I believe it starts with doublethink or a type of disconnect where people know the US is not democratic, but still believe the US is democratic and fighting the good fight against "authoritarian" regimes.

Thanks for the links I hadn't seen this. Foggy is actually making an interesting argument about the sociological and propaganda mechanisms of the modern hate train, then gets in his truck and drives over someone he suspects uses AI and backs up a few times.

It's the very "when in doubt, even the tiniest evidence shall count for the absolute moral guilt of the accused".

Probably none of us can really escape this mechanism where we have some kind of trigger.

To rise to the supreme peak you need to care about thing except advancing. No family, friendship, empathy, love, justice, freedom, sex. Only greed. Every decision you make has to be in the stratagem of gaining and maintaining power. Any alternative thought is just a distraction and costs you valuable time or political capital. Only then do you even have a chance to rise to the very top. Ideally you're even lying to yourself. If it helps you to appear to care about family, do so. If not, ignore them.

This is why we're ruled by the worst people.

Depends how you define superintelligence, what I meant is a more specialized superintelligence than AGI. We already seen that with Go and Chess. But if AI overtakes humans in mathematics it takes on a different quality. But we will see. I doubt it stops here.

the machine churns, does some mystery math

Yeah, the sauce is in the mystery math. See my other reply. You're making a category error.

I wonder what has to go through a persons head when they threaten to fight amnesty international?

I mean I don't believe AI is impartial when it comes to geopolitics and providing cover for war and invasions and conflicts, but they are still mostly on mission.

That was the point since I'm interested in the social and psychological phenomenon. There is evidence to prove what I said in western newspapers and Ukrainian academic sources, although it's not easy to find.

But my point is that as soon as something contradicts on someone's worldview these days, people loose their reason and hurl accusations. The possibility of being wrong is just immediately rejected. The enemy must be lying and evil or deluded and inferior.

That is why I brought that point into it, to show this is not limited to AI. There are also topics like "are pitbulls a more dangerous breed?" that was trending yesterday, with subreddits dedicated to hating Pitbulls, while studies and statistics say they are are not.

It's a "category error" like saying hydrodynamics are just quantum mechanics. It does not describe the complex emergent behavior and doesn't really tell you anything. Or it's like saying psychology is how the neurons and synapses connect with each and exchange signals and that is all - this would not explain the mental processes between a marmot and a human. So it's not an accurate simplified description, just a description of the basic building blocks.

Afaik nobody knows how LLMs actually think, we only know sort of how to train them. They are researching how LLMs think with an equivalent to MRI brain scanning: Vista do LLM-MRI Python module: a brain scanner for LLMs

Adam Curtis in the docu Hypernormalization makes an interesting point about the moralization of politics, how since 9/11 politicians have increasingly used "deceptive myths of good vs evil". And I think that has become a large part of online discourse.

Polarization is profitable because it drives engagement. You have one meme mocking the position of the other side and the other side has a counter meme, and together they boost each other, slowly mutate into more extreme forms. So people increasingly see each other as extreme versions. But it also makes your own side more extreme and unyielding.

And the rise of trolls with climate denial and ending in Trump being cheered for his psychological terror campaign shows where we are today. I suspect it evolved naturally as a response to the unrelenting stupidity by the fascist MAGA trolls. But it's not just maga that is fine denying reality, denying logical arguments and resorts to demonizing the ideological enemy. It is good vs evil all the way down now.

Meanwhile the true evil, the class warfare of the plutocrats against us, is largely ignored. Instead "tankies" and the more extremist communist who actually offer an alternative ideology that could provide a different perspective and a way out of our current situation have been defederated and banned from the largest group of lemmy instances. And that was only possible through this extremification of the ideological opponent as evil.

The same absolutely applies to fuckai. You still get comments that LLMs only copy and randomly rearrange text in their database and cannot reason at all. Which is objectively false. And you get the avalanche of hate.

Same with pointing out that the absolute evidence the CIA funded and trained the organizer of the maidan protests in the Ukraine and the evidence of the massacre being a false flag by far right nazi sympathizers, therefor rendering the question of fault and diplomatic solutions more nuanced than what is allowed in public discourse.

Meanwhile on topics like banning hate speech, where there shouldn't be any tolerance, there is.

So I do think you're mostly right, but it's not so much done out of cruelty, but because we've all been trained like dogs by social media to behave like this and enjoy the bliss of group approval. Kinda like The Orville episode about the base democratic society they encounter. Reality and truth is what the majority decides it is.

But they do plan to release the Astra model to the public "after it's finished" I assume?

And yeah this Lean software sounds amazing, didn't know this was possible.

I misread your last sentence in a way that create a different problem: Imagine AI starts producing more and more proofs at a pace that humans can't keep up with. So science advances, and humans can even make use of it, but can't verify or really understand the theory any more. Like we get better working machines, materials and processes, but do not understand why because we can't keep up. If that happened then that I guess would a significant stage in the singularity.

Well truly profitable applications for LLMs are pretty limited so far, but they will come. Lets say you can replace a tax advisor / accountant with a specialized LLM agent (one that doesn't hallucinate tax code lol). Imagine oyu have an open source project that uses a coding AI agent to frequently update and retrain the tax LLM with the new regulations and laws and unit tests all this. So it's ultimately easy to use, you just talk to the tax AI agent. Or alternatively, because they managed to make open weight LLMs illegal because they are piracy because they use books and posts without permission to train and can't afford to pay the license fees. Now everybody has to use a commercial AI tax service. At the same price at what it cost previously to hire a real human.

As AI models get better they replace human labor. This is a problem under capitalism, otherwise we could just all just be working less and chill. But it gets even worse if "we" (like the 99%) can't make use of open source models. Then the plutocrats get to own this newly replaced labor as free labor and collect rent.

This is why I believe the IP argument of anti-AI is so dangerous. They can afford to pay license fees, we / open source can't. See patents, or see healthcare insurance purposefully making healthcare costs go up.
