Emu Night (1/2) [BeetleMoses]

BeetleMoses | Bluesky

::: spoiler Transcript Comic page 1: a group of young emo people are hanging out in a venue with a banner that reads EMO NIGHT. Outside the venue, an emu is on the phone. He says, “yeah, could you pick me up? I think I misread the flyer.” Suddenly, behind the emu someone exclaims, “hey!”

Page 2: a girl standing in the doorway of the venue says to the emu, “you coming in? The show’s about to start!” The emu, a bit surprised, responds, “oh. Uhh…” Cut to the interior of the venue and the emu is standing in a crowd of people watching a band perform. He seems to be enjoying himself. :::

It's like a highschool reunion I guess? At least to me Emo (music) is something that happened a while ago.

Not according to wikipedia though. TIL

more hardcore-emo than pop-emo

sleepmode@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 33d

Around here the bands were popular but most people just dressed in the usual thrift store punk rock or hardcore attire. Kids with the getup were considered something else and referred to as scenesters.

I remember when the term Emo was new and everyone confused it with Emu

SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world · 48 pts · 34d (9 replies)

I remember nobody confusing those terms.

Lol yeah, I don't remember this happening at all. Probably because you could kind of tell from context which word would come up and emu would rarely come up in conversation where I lived as a teen.

I grew up in an area where neither was very common so I guess that's why. Also, the vowels are still district but closer than in English

k0e3@lemmy.ca · 3 pts · 33d (1 reply)

Sorry if I'm wrong, but I think you mean distinct.

True

I guess we never met

SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 34d (3 replies)

You're also not "everyone."

lugal@sopuli.xyz · 4 pts · 33d (2 replies)

I might have exaggerated. I'm not claiming universality. To be more precise: In my social group, people confused these words sometimes on purpose but also as a genuine mistake. This might differ completely in other cities and countries

SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 33d (1 reply)

If you don't use the same vowels in your language, I guess

lugal@sopuli.xyz · 2 pts · 33d

The vowels are distinct but closer than in English

It was actually short for Emutional Hardcore, which got shortened down to EmuCore and later just Emu.

Ha! Flyer. That's the joke right?

Buddahriffic@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 33d

Don't feel too bad, Emu, Elmo made a similar mistake last week.

Did he help them customize their car insurance?

LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 34d

Yeah I'm pretty sure this was meant to be a car insurance advert

Is it just me or is 'emo' just 'goth who can't/doesn't want to put in the time, money, and effort to fit the goth aesthetic?'

nonfuinoncuro@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 33d

that... actually makes a lot of sense
