He can't possibly do it, legally. By announcing it, he earns cred with people who like him and ensures that he couldn't possibly do it even if it were legal. It's a win-win for him as now he gets credit, but doesn't have to do anything.

Legally, there's an ICC warrant for his arrest.

Here is a fun fact: the US has a law which says they will use all means necessary to free a US service person if they are detained by the ICC.

And it's in the news again so I guess they are planning (more) war crimes 🤷‍♀️

Terrorist country.

Despite how our politicians act, netanyahu is not a US anything.

I'm not sure I understand this reply?

TheCriticalMember@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 61d (1 reply)

You specifically stated "free a US service person," which netanyahu isn't.

Arcanepotato@crazypeople.online · 1 pts · 61d

Oh, sure. It would suffice to say the US isn't a signatory to the ICC. My comment was to highlight that the US is pointedly against the ICC and has been for decades.

mctoasterson@reddthat.com · 5 pts · 62d

The US isn't signatory to any of the enabling treaties of the ICC and generally doesn't recognize its authority.

Which is enforced purely on a federal level not on a municipal level

Unfortunately might I add

Kacarott@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 62d (2 replies)

Why does announcing it ensure that he couldn't do it if it were legal? Because Netanyahu would stay away?

DagwoodIII@piefed.social · 5 pts · 62d

Fidel Castro came to New York at the height of the Cold War and no police agency touched him.

And as an aside. Castro was told that he couldn't go anywhere except Manhattan. He agreed and took rooms at the Hotel Terresa on 125 Street in the middle of Harlem. He was a big hit with the locals.

echo@lemmy.today · 2 pts · 62d

Because Trump would be sure there are federal thugs there to intervene and because Netanyahu would stay in a safe location at all times.

That seems like the kinda thing you just shouldn't say. Nab him in accordance with international law and ship him out of territorial waters immediately.

adespoton@lemmy.ca · 26 pts · 62d (4 replies)

The reason he’s saying it is to create FUD. The reality is that he can’t legally do it, but he’s looking anyway. At the municipal level, Netanyahu has diplomatic immunity. It would have to be done at the federal level, and they show no interest in doing so.

wotaku@discuss.tchncs.de · 9 pts · 62d (1 reply)

FUD?

TroublesomeTalker@feddit.uk · 12 pts · 62d

Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt.

It would be awesome to see but it would also immediately create another constitutional crisis

Guaranteed half of ICE will suddenly be reassigned to run interference.

Populism of the bad kind. Announcing the arresting talks, I mean.

If Mandani were legit he would just arrest him. Period.

Grass@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 62d (5 replies)

why would netanyahu be going to nyc?

BrainInABox@lemmy.ml · 4 pts · 62d (3 replies)
