Richard Williams (the one who did Roger Rabbit and The Thief and The Cobbler) had an interview in which talked about density of composition and he took Martin's The Destruction of Pompeii as an example and he took comically long time deconstructing all the things that take place in the painting as if he was going to make it sequential - it was about an hour long and absolutely mesmerizing - it used to be on vimeo but it seems to be gone now

Just the scale alone! Every time I see The Destruction of Sodom and Gamorrah I'm awed at the tiny blocks at the back which turn to be whole buildings!
