Harry Anderson did this trick in the early '80s on Cheers. Obviously not the origin but it's where I first saw it.

What's the general consensus on whether people still know this trick? I've known the phrase for ages, but I never heard of the trick.

Slide the hat to knock over the glass, spilling it under the hat. They never said they would "empty the glass," but rather to "drink every drop of the liquor."
