I hear you on the level of history should emphasize a "look at what we allowed" rhetoric to instill some semblance of public shame to curtail future behaviour. I just think it's at odds with the reality in which history is read; namely the "look at what these specific villains did, and were they justified" as a form of absolving ourselves and humanizing said villains.
If we're going to scapegoat, might as well not draw attention to it at all IMO
I had that parachute action man, and I remember chucking him down a flight of stairs. Shitty, shitty parachute. The doll itself was surprisingly well made (I guess it was drop tested a lot during production?) but weighed a ton and the parachute was hilariously too small for it
To play devil's advocate (for absolutely no reason other than what other kind of answer were you looking for here), I think America's only problem is trust in its fellow man, and this is largely exacerbated by the media who over-report on violent acts.
Not that they shouldn't, of course, but you look at the crime statistics in the 70s on anywhere in the planet and the murder and kidnapping rate was way waay up, yet hope/community seemed to reign supreme in the streets because no one paid attention to the minor violent occurences happening out of sight around them.
Not saying that ignorance is necessarily better, but I think fear is the main enemy of the people and the media knows it and wields it to the absolute delight of the government and their corporate sponsors.
That fear culture is definitely creeping into the UK via what I'd call US interference (no doubt with plenty of helpful spoonfuls from Russia and/or China), and people are definitely turning on each other... but you don't see it too much in the cities
I mean if you literally walk into the room bright eyed and fresh, then make eye contact with everyone there, your face drops and your eyes become evasive and listless, and then you use that excuse...
Ooh I have a fancy bike too, and it's fast but I just don't like riding it because it's got no mass! I need something with heft so that when I'm not on the up or down stroke the bike isn't seemingly pausing between strokes due to lack of inertia
(All in my head btw, the bike is faster than my old steel frame, but I just like the feel of the steeler more)
