I feel there should be a distinction between graffiti - which is artistic, and tagging - which is just spamming your initials repeatedly along a surface, making it look like shit.
Good tagging is art though. A tag back in the day was either well executed with a distinct style, or the next guy covered it up.
Besides, tagging was sorta rarely just initials. Wasn't exactly unheard of, but your tag was typically a thing of its own.
And yeah, there's a lot of overlap between graffiti as art and graffiti as vandalism, but the people that made a hobby, then art form, out of it weren't just scrawling initials.
There's nothing wrong with preferring the more professional version of something over the cheap version. Like enjoying an escort instead of picking up a hooker.
I like when graffiti is well made and nice to look at, and not a mess of squiggles drawn with the artistic expertise of 4 year olds vaguely resembling letters or words
EDIT: to be clear, even single-word-graffiti can look good if they're well made. I believe there's a lot of skill going into making a nice looking "tag". It's a sort of modern day calligraphy, and I'm down to see more of that instead of shitty mindless tagging
that's why I like places that offer free-for-all walls to spray on. But if you have the audacity to spray on someone else's wall I expect some degree of mastery in the craft
