It kinda still is. It’s just that people who could afford a 486/Pentium beige box in 1996 were a very specific type of person. Even among that bunch Duke being #1 and Quake at #4 shows that a Pentium was out of reach for many. A barrier to entry was lowered substantially since then with everything that brings.
