Thanks once again for everyone who took part in our recent giveaway! We've had quite a turnout and six winners in total. I hope that y'all enjoy your new games!
I still don't have any soulslikes on my plate. I have downloaded the RE: 9 demo though which is basically a Sekiro-like with its parry mechanic /s
Don't get me wrong - if FS announced Bloodborne 2 tomorrow, I'd be very excited. So much so that I'd probably even buy a digital copy if Sony said it won't be printed on a disc. However, do we really need Bloodborne 2?
The story is done. There's not a whole lot more to extract from the lore outside of what already has been. A prequel could make sense and could likely be spun up in an interesting way. But in an age where sequels, spin-offs, and unnecessary remakes exist in all branches of the entertainment industry, maybe it's for the better if Bloodborne is left as is and isn't expanded upon yet again.
Not everything in existence needs a continuation. In anime, for example, I would probably like Samurai Champloo 2, or Cowboy Bebop 2, or Death Note 2, or Afro Samurai 2, or or or... But at the end of the day, isn't part of the appeal of media that it stands on its own, deriving value from the experience itself without needing further derivatives to dilute the essence of the medium?
I don't know, maybe I'm jaded. But my view on BB2 has changed over the years. Between spiritual successors like Lies of P, which is phenomenal and is only lightly inspired by Bloodborne I'd suggest, or other contemporaries that take elements from Bloodborne, like the fast-paced combat and focus on parrying and aggression like in Khazan, I don't feel like we really need a Bloodborne sequel.
What do you think?

Bloodborne 2? We already have it! May I introduce you to our Lord and Savour Withering Rooms? Okay, I jest, it's merely one of its many influences but I will jump on any opportunity to spread the good word.
As for me, I am still in a period of not gaming all that much. But if I do it will be plugging away at The Drifter, where I'm about halfway through. It's absolutely excellent, probably the best point-and-click/adventure game I've played. Great writing and dialogue, compelling conspiracy-based plot, top tier voice acting, great pixel art. Breakneck pace too, it feels like you're playing a pulpy thriller classic. I'm loving it.

That artwork is beautiful!
I think I saw a speedrun of this game a while back? It didn’t look that interesting then. But maybe it’s worth another look. I’m bookmarking it.

The Drifter is incredible, if you like the genre I think it's a must play. Minimal moon logic too, just ran in to the first convoluted bits in chapter 5 but even those were somewhat logical. Otherwise it's all made sense, which is very rare for the genre.
I didn't even know there were speedruns for Withering Rooms, to be honest. Doesn't look like a very populated genre either so kind of random you stumbled upon one haha. I can't speak for your tastes but I absolutely loved it. It's a great fusion of a lot of different inspiration sources, from Silent Hill to Metroidvanias to Fromsoft games but ends up with something I thought was very unique. Very impressive as a solo dev game.

It's been quite a while since I played a Point-and-Click games. But the next time I feel the itch, I will definitely look at The Drifter. The artwork really is incredible; I just looked through the steam page gain and this looks fantastic.
Withering Rooms is a solo dev game!?! That doesn't look a solo dev game… That looks like a small team Unity game. But yeah, it's a solo dev and they seem to be developing a spiritual successor/sequel to Withering Rooms.
I think I saw this speedrun years ago.

The sequel looks so good too, and it will be a full-on Soulslike too I believe. I can't recommend it enough, I love everything about it (even the somewhat clunky combat) and I think the lore is great too.

So far none of the other soulslikes has quited scratched that BB itch for me.
I would love a new Bloodborne game if it ends up in a similar relation as darksouls to darksouls 3 - an expanded more in-depth exploration of similar subject matter. Sure the BB story is very done and I don't need a repeat of the same thing. But theres always more to explore in something so dense.
BB is still my personal favorite game and I'd love more of the same regardless of its a pre/sequal.
Also love the recommendations in the thread & comments. For sure checking them out.

I've been working my way through Demon's Souls on my Steam Deck. It runs perfectly, I'm very impressed with the folks who made RPCS3. I got connected to the Archstones private server too, so I can get a little bit of the online experience— bloodstains and messages, mostly.
It's amazing how much of the Soulslike formula had already been worked out in the very first game. It feels very much like playing Dark Souls, and while not quite as polished it is still very fun.
I've beaten the Phalanx, now I'm poking around at the other locations.

Bloodborne is a perfect self contained story it doesn’t need a sequel.
It need a pc remaster and a spiritual successor.

Need? No…
Want? Heck yeah!
For me, Bloodborne is not about story or setting. For me, it’s about gameplay and vibe. In a sequel, Yharnam doesn't even need to be mentioned. I just need this eldritch nightmare vibe, this wrongness; the feeling you get when Amygdala looms over the chapel. Oh, and also gameplay: fast gameplay with unique weapons and gun parry? I want more of that. Many people connect Bloodborne with a pseudo-Victorian setting, but for me that’s not essential. A sequel could be in an epic fantasy setting or a steampunk setting or, and this would be my favorite, a sci-fi setting. I love Lovecraftian stuff in a sci-fi setting. Imagine an Amygdala hanging on the side of a spaceship! Or an energy blaster in place of a flintlock pistol.
For me, the more difficult question would be which unlikely sequel would I want more: Bloodborne 2 or Elden Ring 2?
No Soulslike, no video games for me this weekend. I’m traveling and visiting family.
I’m also not sure what I’m gonna play next weekend. I just completed two RL1 playthroughs in Elden Ring back to back and I’m think I should play something different then Elden Ring next. Maybe a playthrough of DS2 or DS3? Or I’m leaving the 3rd dimension behind and finally play a 2d Soulslike?
Coelacanth@feddit.nu · 2 pts · 18d
If you just want more Lovecraftian vibes, aren't there dozens - potentially hundreds - of games that deliver that? Or do you mean strictly within the Soulslike genre?
MissingInteger@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 18d
More strictly in the Soulslike genre.
The Merger of action gameplay and eldritch vibes is something I really enjoy. I wouldn’t for example be as interested in a Point-and-Click game with lovecraftian aspects or not really more interested than in any other types of Point-and-Click games.
Coelacanth@feddit.nu · 3 pts · 18d
Not strictly action maybe but what about Still Wakes The Deep or The Sinking City?
I also really enjoyed SKALD: Against the Black Priory, although maybe CRPG falls under point-and-click.
MissingInteger@lemmy.zip · 2 pts · 18d
Those are some interesting recommendations!
I don't think I've heard of any of them before (maybe some screenshots from Still Wakes the Deep?).
Is the fighting gameplay in the The Sinking City any good or is this more about the world?
When I finally want to play something other than Soulslikes again, I will definitely look at these games.
Coelacanth@feddit.nu · 2 pts · 18d
I have not played the Sinking City (it's actually probably up next on my docket - I bought it this Summer Sale finally), but from what I've heard the action gameplay is not a particular draw. It's first and foremost an investigation game with a focus on the mysteries, cases and the Lovecraftian city.
