I had one. My father said Commodore would put Microsoft, IBM, and Apple out of business with that computer. I disagreed. I think the A1000 was too good, and to this day modern computers don’t do some of the things it did (and that’s a shame).
I think that's any computer company, though. They made a good computer. Bill Gates said you're not getting proper multitasking with less than 8MB RAM. I never used an A1000 without the RAM expansion (which doubled the system's base 256KB), but I imagine it worked the same without it. Some will say that's not proper multitasking. I agree with those who said it still basically was. I'll also agree with those who said the Amiga 1000 was more "gaming computer" than "working computer". I'm biased though, that's what I used mine for. Still, it felt like gaming was always at the heart of the machine.
What killed Commodore was chip fabrication. While it was great strategy at first to do it all in-house, later they were unable to out R&D the rest of the chip fab world and the rise of cheap ibm-pc clones, as well as poor business planning and debt. Commodore was rudderless after it's founder dipped out.
I was totally bummed out by the fall of Commodore, loved my Amigas.
