Could be worse. Could be the Go to Jail card mistaken for a Get out of Jail Free card. I've literally seen someone do that - put it by their money pile and everything - and the other player not notice. I'm not even sure the person who had it knew they'd committed the "crime" by doing that.
As a child at the time, I somewhat carelessly blurted out what they'd done not long after I noticed.
Ending up in jail is a good thing in monopoly once all properties are bought. You can stay there, collect rent and make trades without risking landing on someone's property and paying rent.
