Holy shit this is fantastic.

I've seen similar posts before with like dark souls bonfires or cutesy photos or cozy fantasy stuff, but this? This is art. It's so visceral, so raw, it's positively dripping with the juices of a reality most people only dream of and yet completely and totally exists in this world. It slaps you upside the head and locks eyes with you, snapping you instantly out of whatever funk, demanding your attention and ordering you to double check your eyes. Yes that is a shotgun, yes they are gesturing to you specifically, and no it isn't a gameplay screenshot or weird meta post or even a meme. There are no filters or edits on this. It's real, realer than most things are on the internet. Someone got dressed, brought their rifle, and took a photo out in the wilderness. That fire? Real. That breakfast? Real. That person probably ate it. Shit, they might have literally shared it with someone. That someone could be you. Not in a "imagine you're in this fictional setting" way but in a "if things were different I could genuinely, actually, be there, in the snowy wood" way, a way that drags you hand and foot into the imagination, into wondering what it's like, to be there. The gentle, non-threatening invitation is starkly contrasted by the weapon in hand, a clear reminder of the possibility and reality of violence, and yet you somehow just know that no harm would ever come to you here. They've accepted you, just as you are, and all that's left is to accept their invitation. Warm eggs. Bacon. Coffee. A simple fire, a real one, not one for show or aesthetics but built for function and warmth. And probably the best conversation you'll ever have in your life.

probably the most heartfelt comment I've seen on Lemmy, thank you for posting that

Fmstrat@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 21d (2 replies)

I hate that I felt like it was AI while reading it. :(

ComicalMayhem@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 21d (1 reply)

That is actually very disheartening to hear since writing is like the one thing I'm moderately ok at

Fmstrat@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 21d

Yea, to be clear I really liked the writing. So please don't feel bad about that! It's more the innate sense of suspicion the internet has given me has now made me think that while I read most anything of interest, and I really can't stand that as I enjoy writing as well.

Cris_Citrus@piefed.zip · 11 pts · 22d

Lol, I'm so glad you enjoyed it

I saw it on fetlife of all places (which confuses me cause like who in their right mind scrolls for so long on fetlife that you need a break. Fetlife is for seeing my friends naked and hearing they're doing well and then closing, not endless scrolling), and thought to myself fedi folks would enjoy it :)

Honestly, I've been in that exact situation (sans shotgun). BBQ on a campfire in the middle of a snowy forest, shared with a comrade. T'was nice. This post very much brings back good memories. I wonder if I'll ever have an experience like that again, given how far away I am from snowy forests now.

This is one of the best comments I've read on lemmy in a while. I hope you don't mind that I shared it on !bestoflemmy@lemmy.world; I think it certainly deserves a post there.

disgusting carnism

Cris_Citrus@piefed.zip · 3 pts · 20d (3 replies)

I was gonna say we can make you some instead, but I realized I don't actually know any savory vegan breakfast foods that you cook in a pan like that

If you were to pick some things to have prepared for you in this context for breakfast what would you choose? Does seitan or tempeh fry up crispy and work well in this sort of context? I guess there are always egg substitutes but I don't really know much about them or how well they work

What kinda breakfast food would you wanna be offered? :)

naevaTheRat@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 0 pts · 20d (2 replies)

Tofu scramble, baked beans, English breakfast but with vegan sausages or bacon, kimchi pancakes, pancakes/crepes, besan pancakes, lentil omlettes, hash, kartofelpuffer, douhua, curdled soymilk porridge, French toast etc

The sky's the limit. You basically just make breakfast but whenever you would add a body part or something appropriated from someone you just don't, and you use a substitution from a plant. Like you can use soymilk in place of cow's milk, alternative binders to egg like hydrocolloids/psyllium husk/flours and starches, seasoned tofu, tvp or seitan and so in.

Cris_Citrus@piefed.zip · 1 pts · 18d (1 reply)

Come and join us by the fire, we can make you potato hash and some vegan sausages :)

I've never heard of kartofelpuffer or douhua, what are they? I've been trying to learn more vegan dishes but only know one I really love so far. I really like chickpea curry, and I have a couple more dishes I'm working on making vegan but I'm still figuring out substitutions I like and stuff

Liberation pledge sorry, I'll never eat with carnists practicing carnism. I mean would you sit at a table and watch people torture a puppy and feel find because you didn't partake? Or eat somewhere with enslaved waiters but serve yourself?

One of my most fundamental beliefs is that subjecting other minds to domination and violence for pleasure is impermissible. Tbh I'm honestly surprised more people aren't vegan given most people think of themselves as people who would choose to be kind if it were an option. Very few people think they would be among the varst majority that would have endorsed the transatlantic slave trade, yet we enslave other species who we have every reason to believe feel very similarly to ourselves without thought.

https://www.daringgourmet.com/traditional-kartoffelpuffer-reibekuchen-german-potato-pancakes/#recipe - a german potato pancake that traditionally includes egg but doesn't need it. If you omit flour and cook it till the potato breaks down and glues together you get rรถsti

Douhua is a chinese style of tofu that doesn't involve draining out excess water. It is very soft, almost like a stiffer yoghurt. Often sweet it makes a delicious breakfast topped with savoury things. Although it sort of a pain in the arse to make and coagulate soymilk, hence why I usually use the Taiwanese style of acid curdled soymilk porridge. https://www.assortedeats.com/salty-soy-milk

Cooking vegan is very easy, protein is readily available in forms that meet or exceed the density found in meat such as kidney beans or TVP (defatted soy meat alternative, extremely cheap). All you need to do is eat a spread of grains and legumes (or lots of soy which is complete) but that can be in separate meals. You can even do extremely delicious junk food: https://theeburgerdude.com/
