I think I'm qualified to answer this. A fart travels at approximately ten feet per second. Mach one varies by sea level and atmospheric conditions but under ideal circumstances the slowest speed is around 740 miles per hour, or about 1,085 feet per second. A little division tell us a fart is about

Since you're a farticist, can you tell me if the sound and the smell arrive at different speeds like thunder and lightning? And can I use the Mississippi system to tell if the farter is getting closer or further away?

Yes, sound and smell will travel at different speeds. This is because sound is carried by vibrations in the air, but smell is carried by molecules in the air.

Unfortunately, the Mississippi system is unreliable in this case because the speed of smell is not consistent. Atmospheric conditions can greatly affect the rate of propagation. Also, even if atmospheric conditions are controlled, the mass and density of particles emitted can vary greatly from one flatus to the next. This is due to a great number of gastrointestinal factors that can't reliably be accounted for.
