Google+ made ~11 year old me feel like a badass hacker tech enthusiast for using a niche social media platform

I just remember that srupid app being installed on my phones and never opening it or caring about it

It was so much better than Facebook, but if course Google mismanaged it to death.

I just want to turn off shorts completely. I know there are extensions that kind of do it, but they all cause problems for me while browsing videos.

If you have ublock origin, you can make them functionally disappear:

Copy the link below, go to uBlock Origin > Dashboard > Filter lists, scroll to the bottom, and paste the link underneath the 'Import...' heading:

https://raw.githubusercontent.com/gijsdev/ublock-hide-yt-shorts/master/list.txt

Actually made YouTube a non-cancerous experience for me

I'll give that a try, but I'm not expecting it to work. All the other solutions have cause the feed to "rubber band" around randomly as I scroll when the shorts are dynamically removed from the feed.
