Idea: horror game in which the protagonist has a modern, reliable, lightweight, high-lumen LED flashlight that basically turns night into day, with a modern batttery that can power it for 6+ hours. No stupid game-world limitations.
The world is populated with creatures that come out in darkness, but become more horrific and aggressively violent when exposed to light.

Do high lumen flashlights last that long? (Edit: Yeah, Google says they only last 45 - 90 minutes. Admittedly, that would get you most of the way through most horror games.)
It might be a cool game mechanic to balance brightness and field of vision against battery life, though.
How flashlights work in video games is so annoying. Like. It doesn't illuminate a single tiny dot dear lord. My absolute shit flashlights that exist just to find the big lantern illuminate better.
My biggest gripe about Subnautica is that the flashlight sucks. Pretty mediocre light output, and a total battery life of something like 2 minutes of constant use. When you finally unlock super-fancy alien tech radioactive batteries, they're good enough to run the flashlight for ... maybe 10 minutes? It would be ridiculously outclassed by any halfway decent modern flashlight ... and this is supposed to be future space tech?
That said, it requires no exotic materials to build, and it can withstand being used as a hammer to smash rocks and still remain waterproof up to at least ~1500m, so there's that. Can even change batteries while fully submerged. So maybe they put all the R&D budget into durability and didn't have any left for efficient light output...
I like how the BFG edition of Doom 3 taught us that the original ductape-less version was juat better for a horror game. We just didn't understand that Doom was supposed to be a horror game.

I think it would be super cool but hard to pull off!

Don't forget the ones where you have to shake or wind the flashlight to regen its power.

I have a crank radio/flashlight combo. I could see that being an interesting mechanic: balancing light/power/radio for information.

Not even exclusive to horror games.

The O2 meter sucks, too. And the draw distance.
