Every so often, I’ll be piloting some sensor-laden, software-defined press car down a dark stretch of highway when an oncoming driver’s high beams arrive like a targeted retinal strike, an involuntary reminder that modern automotive lighting has entered its own lumen arms race.

Anyone who has driven at night in the last few years knows what I’m talking about: A modern crossover crests a hill in the opposite lane, and the cabin briefly fills with enough cold-white light to suggest a police helicopter has joined traffic. The obvious assumption is that drivers are simply leaving their high beams on more often, but the reality is more complicated.

  1. Warm white (~4500K) low-/dipped-/passing-beams are just as bright but less punishing for both you and other drivers.
  2. Vertical alignment screws can often be turned by hand or with basic tools, and beam cutoff visibly sharpens at the appropriate height
  3. Beam cut off is defeated by oxidized lenses, blinding oncoming traffic even if headlights are level. Lens restoration kit is $10 and 10 minutes of scrubbing.

The article is essentially an apologist rag for brighter headlights. "They are safer and reduce collisions," coupled with an auto manufacturer's hand-wavy "the ones that blind you are misaligned, OURs have sensors and an LED matrix to avoid blinding other cars" while completely ignoring cyclists and pedestrians.

In theory, it’s elegant. In practice, it’s a computer trying to interpret a fast-moving, low-light world in real time, deciding whether that reflective flicker is a cyclist, a sign, or just the universe messing with it. And for all their confidence, computers still hesitate in slightly unnerving ways. Object recognition can be imperfect, beam adjustments aren’t truly instantaneous, and the entire system depends on a stack of assumptions about what a system thinks the road is doing at any given moment.

More like cautious optimism than apologist, especially when they go into fatalities caused by bright headlights.

i rented a Taos for a road trip to keep my old junker off the road. it was incredibly unnerving to feel the course correction even while parking. call me old, but i dont need my vehicle to drive for me, and it was more distracting than helpful. first experience with ACC too, i did like how it matches speed with the person ahead, but it isnt NECESSARY.
