This Metaphor is so flawed, pickled ginger is great, Sometimes i eat a whole glass of it.
Zendaya is like bay leaf in Bolognese. Maybe it adds something, but in general you could make a good bolo without it too.
It seems like the guy in the OP didn't understand that the pickled ginger is actually there as a delicious pallet cleanser to allow you to enjoy the variety of rolls more fully.
Admittedly, I don't order sushi because of the ginger. On the other hand though I'd be pretty pissed off if my Sushi didn't come with ginger. I expect it. I look forward to it.

Some of us have a jar of pickled ginger in the fridge that we eat straight from the jar.
