University of Tokyo suspends professor over 'Tiananmen code' embedded in website - The Mainichi

TOKYO -- The University of Tokyo announced on Aug. 4 that it had taken disciplinary action against a professor in their 60s for embedding "Tiananmen code" in websites operated by the professor's department and laboratory.

If it contains keywords related to the 1989 Tiananmen Square incident, the page may be blocked by China's internet censorship system and become inaccessible from within the country.

The phrase "六四天安門 (June 4th Tiananmen)" embedded by this professor is famous in Japan as a "magic word" used by xenophobic right-wingers to enable the exclusion of Chinese people online.
