With that belaying technique, I wouldn't trust them either.

Right? There's so much slack in that line...

Two hands outstretched on the top end of the rope with a bunch of slack is just asking for massive friction burns and a pancaked buddy. Gotta keep one hand on the brake side of the ATC and keep the slack to a minimum.

I saw someone get dropped like 20 feet in a climbing gym one time, I think he only got a broken tailbone or something but the fact that can just happen, I don't think I'd want to be on either side of that.

Wrap the rope in a loop around either your waste or otherwise your palm and shoulder. Keep tense, it could pull tight at any moment. Stay close to the wall. Pull slack to make loop bigger, pull opposite side to make loop smaller, repeat constantly.

Better advice. Never, ever belay someone unless you are trained and certified. Climbing gyms will usually enforce this rule, but learn to enforce it yourself. It's never worth it to try and wing this skill, you need to know what you're doing at all times.

And luckily it’s not even that hard to learn. You just need someone to teach you the ropes.
