Any XP earned after a player reached the 150 cap will carry over automatically when the patch goes live and not be lost as well!
The Helldivers 2 level cap is being increased from 150 to 300

while the very simplistic part of my brain likes 'huhuh number go up,' the thinking part of my brain says, 'this isnt meaningful progression.' ship upgrades and diversification! let me specialize my upgrades to my playstyle! customize my ship more than just its name!

I am very cautiously optimistic, but the article does mention they are expanding personal and war progression systems with this update too, they're just not telling us what.
I'd like to hope it's not just titles for the levels.
