ELIA: Explain like I'm American

vestigeofgreen@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 49 pts · 9d

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyrillic_alphabets#Common_letters НЯ -> Nya? (so sayeth google translate)

DmMacniel@feddit.org · 13 pts · 9d (6 replies)

that cyrillic is probably spelt like cat.

djmikeale@feddit.dk · 45 pts · 9d (4 replies)

НЯ is pronounced nya which apparently can mean "cute" in Russian. Guess that might be the joke?

Cat is Кошка in Russian / кіт in Ukrainian

Godnroc@lemmy.world · 43 pts · 9d (1 reply)

Nya is an onomatopoeia for the sound a cat makes. Typically associated with pop culture representations of felines, catgirls/boys, and other cat-like beings.

djmikeale@feddit.dk · 10 pts · 9d

Oooh I see. Thanks!

DmMacniel@feddit.org · 4 pts · 9d

even better.

Aqarius@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 8d

"Nya" is Japanese for "meow".

WhyIHateTheInternet@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 9d

testaccount789@sh.itjust.works · 22 pts · 8d

Slavic enough to read it, 196 enough to understand.

Etterra@discuss.online · 5 pts · 8d (2 replies)

If 'R' is pronounced 'arr' then is 'Я' pronounced "rra'?

Aqarius@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 8d (1 reply)

"Ya". And the Cyrillic "H" is an N. So, ня = nya.

Etterra@discuss.online · 1 pts · 4d

I like mine better and as an American I will be taking no further questions at this time.
