I think that would be even more true before modern equipment. There would be foliage covering everything, unless your by a streambed or something a rock would be a pain to find consistently.
That's a good point. I've never heard it specified (outside of art) how can killed Abel, but assuming they were farmers, it's reasonable that it could have been with a rock: the only times I've consistently found decently-sized rocks was when I needed to dig a hole. Not when I wanted a rock, mind, but when I needed a hole.
use a lever to pull the string back harder to throw the sharp rock on a stick even harder / faster
Fun fact: many crossbows despite being hard as fuck to load deal way less force than a heavy bow, they are only good when you have an army of farmers who only know how to plant and you wanna use them for war

I feel like the evolution of weaponry was something like:
3a. hit them with a rock on the end of a stick
3b. use a string / spring to throw the rock faster / harder

First weapon was probably a rock.

Maybe it's because of where I grew up, but I could usually find a serviceable stick more easily than a decent rock.

Not this one, why would you give your enemy your weapon and leave yourself unarmed?
