I freshly released my first fully free Android game: Wandering Alchemist (GPS walking game)

Fully free, no ads, no in-app purchases (besides a "Support the developer" option), no data collection and fully offline playable. All you need is your phone and GPS :)

I originally made the game to go on walks, unfortunately I sat even more in front of my PC to develop it. It is what it is. Hopefully it motivates some of you to get your steps in 💚

Google Play Store

General idea of the game

Collect ingredients, brew them into potions and sell them to merchants. With the gold and reputation you get you can buy things and decorate your neighborhood. Other players see the same map and resources (so you can indirectly play together), but the game world fully belongs to you.

For any questions and suggestions I'm always available!

I'm currently working on an iOS port, Apple is taking their sweet time to review the game, but hopefully in a few days it will be out. Exactly the same as on Android, free, no ads, no in-app purchases.

If you saw this before, I already posted it on games@lemmy.world. But I realized our own lemmy.zip instance has a gaming community too (:

This is pretty sick. Would you be willing to make a Linux port, considering that's a growing interest around some parts of Lemmy?

Vlyn@lemmy.zip · 5 pts · 13d (2 replies)

Linux port? It's a GPS walking game, or do you mean Linux for phones (can't they use an Android simulator? The APK is available) ^^'

Solrac@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 13d (1 reply)

Indeed I do. I do not know if the engine or framework you used has an API for accessing GPS, but if it does, I'd like to assume it should be fairly easy.

And technically, yes, it could run on Waydroid, but Waydroid does not pass GPS data...

I'm using Godot, which does not include GPS support for Linux exports, sorry. I'd have to write a custom GPS backend for gpsd and even that sounds finicky. GPS has already been a headache on the devices I do support :-/

Very cool! Will you port it to Blackberry OS???

just kidding

Right after I get it to run on my old Texas Instruments Ti 84 :D

This looks super cool!!! Would you consider also publishing it through F-Droid since its free?

Vlyn@lemmy.zip · 7 pts · 12d (1 reply)

It's available on Aurora and as a simple APK download :)

F-Droid is not possible for now, as the game has to be fully open source for it. Maybe in the future when I decide the game is done, but for now it's not planned.

Fair enough.

It was a suggestion to increase the quality content available in F-Droid.

I already downloaded it and look forward to playing it! Thank is a lot for making it!!

I don't get it.

What am I supposed to do? What does walking do? How do i get resources? An i supposed to make potions? What's the goal?

Is there a tutorial or anything anywhere?
Even a short description of what the game is/does?

Vlyn@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 12d (6 replies)

When you first start the game a tutorial should pop up?

Looks like this (without the debug joystick):

You pick up ingredients, brew potions and sell them to merchants. It's like Pokemon Go, you walk in the real world, you move in the game. For orientation you can download your local street map (top left button), if you want. The square resources are minigames (5 different ones at the moment), some events are also on the map you can find.

No "goal", get money, reputation, buy buildings, buy decorations for your neighborhood, buy skins, pets, buffs, earn achievements, ..

rants_unnecessarily@piefed.social · 1 pts · 12d (5 replies)

Yeah, I see that. But that harvest button isn't showing for me. Do I need to walk around for it to show up?
What does walking do?
Does walking just move you from square to square?
Do you need to have the app open when walking?

Vlyn@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 12d (4 replies)

Have you never played Pokemon Go before? It's a GPS game, the entire game world is mapped to the real world. If you walk North in the real world you walk North in the game.

The app only runs when it's open, but you could open it, see there's nothing there, close it, walk 100 meters in a direction, then open it again. Or keep it open and it vibrates your phone if something new pops up.

Best thing you can do is download the street map in the game, then just go for a walk and see what you find :)

The tutorial should have spawned those two resources and an NPC for you, but maybe it got messed up? If you haven't played yet, you can reset your game storage and try again. 3 things should be visible on the map for you on the first start.

I have played Pokémon go, quite a bit infact. But in that there are places to walk to, and you constantly see Pokémon show up on the map, I don't see anything like that in this game...

So just walk in a random direction untill the phone vibrate, or something pops up on the screen? Or are there actual things to walk to? Do I walk to the resources? They move when I zoom in and out, so that's kind of confusing.

Vlyn@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 12d (2 replies)

The edge markers do show how far away you are from a resource. Like below 25m, 50m, 75m and so on.

But I had to remove a full on tracking UI as resources are spread evenly across the world. Pokemon Go curates spots only near streets (and trains drones on the data, lol).

With too much tracking going on I could get into legal trouble if some kid decides to break into private property or runs on some train tracks..

Ok, thanks. I'm beginning to get the gist of it. I'll give it a proper go tomorrow.

Maybe give it a think if there should be some more specifics in the tutorial.
Also after not figuring out what to do I tried to find it again if there was something I missed. Could there be an essay way to find it again?

Vlyn@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 12d

It's a fine balance between providing information and overexplaining. Like I don't want to hand-hold the player for several minutes ^^' Or give them a wall of text to read.

What do you mean "find it again"? The tutorial you can bring up with the ?-button on the top right, everywhere there is one, even in minigames. Or do you mean you saw a resource on the map earlier and want to find it again? Resources do go away over time and new ones pop up (though anything close to you shouldn't go away, so something that is right next to you should never just vanish).
