hey all, would love to start reading more & doomscrolling less!
i’m liking the form factor of the pocketable ones like the XTEINK X3 and X4 (and the S4 even though it’s not available in US). major points for being able to flash another OS on em like CrossPoint. the only downside to the x3 & x4 is no backlight.
are there any other comparable ereaders w a black light that can help me get away from my iphone? TYIA! also, loving this comm!

Hey, welcome! So there quite a few ereaders with a backlight, but not they aren't as small as the XTEINK X3 and X4. But the "ETEINK X4 PRO" does have a built-in light. To be honest, unless you do a lot of reading in the dark or very dim light, most e-ink readers are easily read by just natural light. I only use screen-lit ones when I am reading at night.

Those Facebook ads for the xteink x4 finally got to me and I bought one. Been loving it so far, it's so small that it's easy to always have around.
I did flash Crosspoint onto it and use Caliber to manage my massive hoard of completely totally legally obtained epub books. It's crazy how many books a 32GB SD card can hold. I did have to buy a new one because the cheap SD card it came with literally burned out.
I almost never miss the backlight. The screen is very easy to read with any amount of external light, even a little clip-on book light.

I've recently seen these xteink devices; they feel a bit small to me. Like a smartphone. My ereader is 6" and with bezels it's just about the size of a regular paperback, a bit shorter though. Considering real books have significant margins I can get just about the same experience with this device. Anything below that would strain my eyes too much or make me turn pages even more often or create a weird experience when lines are only 5-6 words long.
Both my Pocketbook and my Kobo Nia are of that size. I recommend the latter although it took a little digging to find out how to skip the "Register Device" popup.
KoReader was installed easily on both.
I recommend a proper case, too - the Pocketbook's screen broke from being stored next to a bunch of keys.
And yes, backlight. I need it even in sufficient artificial light (indoors after dark). My eyes aren't so good anymore.
I bought both used. They weren't super cheap, roughly half new price. The Kobo Nia's battery is in good shape.
