News just came out that Nicholas Hoult is joining the season 2 Harry Potter cast.
I like him and a lot of things he's been in and didn't see it anywhere on Lemmy yet, so I posted it to lemmy.world's News community.
Post was a link to the article that first broke the news, used it's title as my post title, followed all instance and community rules.
Post was removed as "not news" and I was temp banned for "multiple rule violations." Of course the mod can't list what rules those would be, because it didn't violate any of them. If the News community only allows posts on certain news topics then it should specify those in it's rules.
This is actually worse than Reddit. At least Reddit has so many users that when mods keep doing things like this it creates enough drama that they stop or end up replaced. Lemmy mods seem to remove anything they personally don't like and ban anyone who questions them.

News is for actual news not entertainment news.

the entirety of us politics is entertainment

The News community rules don't specify acceptable topics, and there are many posts there on entertainment news.
velma@sh.itjust.works · 8 pts · 32d
Lemmings can be weird about entertainment and pop culture news. Some think it’s beneath them and not worthy of being posted.
There’s a few popculture and television communities that would be better fits for your original post.
That news community is one of two communities I have blocked. The mods there, at least one, do have some power-tripping tendencies.
Edit: Ah yeah it was JonsJava that banned you. I'd avoid him like the plague. It was probably your username that got him hot under the collar.
Abyssian@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 32d
How did you see which it was? Using the website when I check it just tells me "mod."
velma@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 32d
Someone screenshotted what they could see when looking at your post history. It showed JonsJava as the mod that banned you.
Abyssian@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 32d
Right. That was very wise.
JonsJava@lemmy.world · -1 pts · 31d
It actually wasn't the name.
They have contributed in other communities I moderate, without issue.
velma@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 31d
What was the issue with the post in question?
JonsJava@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 31d
It was reported numerous times for being off topic.
Pop culture really needs it's own community. I think it deserves to be here, but in a place people want it.
I try to let the community help decide what belongs. The more diverse the reports, the more likely it doesn't belong. That's why we have the "... at moderators discretion" in the rule.
Pandantic@midwest.social · 6 pts · 31d
So why the ban?
velma@sh.itjust.works · 6 pts · 31d
Then it might be prudent to add no pop culture to the rules.
As it is, you allow some and not others and that’s confusing for users.
Wren@lemmy.today · 10 pts · 31d
You annoy the shit out of me but you still didn't deserve the ban.
The rules/moderation in the news communities are part of the reason why I started my own, I recommend it so we can get more media sources and topics in here.
Abyssian@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 31d
Thanks, I think.
VitoRobles@lemmy.today · 9 pts · 32d
Mate, just post it somewhere else... Somewhere that would better value your posts?
Abyssian@lemmy.world · -1 pts · 32d
Err... isn't that sort of the point here? Pointing out when mods do seemingly random things that don't match their own stated rules and randomly remove posts and ban users?
Maybe I'm missing the point of this community.
Zomg@piefed.world · 9 pts · 31d
Crazy that you're already having problems again. You know the saying...
"If everywhere you go smells like shit, check your own shoes"
dil@piefed.zip · 0 pts · 31d
Or you could be on a website filled with the type of ppl that get banned from reddit (including me lol) We all probably smell like sht
Abyssian@lemmy.world · -1 pts · 31d
Right. I took the time to write out the difficulties I'd had getting an accurate diagnosis and effective medication in the hopes it might help someone else out.
/u/givesomefucks removed the post without bothering to read it because people see headers and formatting and assume it must be AI. I posted saying it's fairly screwed up to doing the community that touts itself as the safe space to discuss mental health issues here. So he permanently banned me and falsified the mod log claiming it was for medical misinformation.
I must be a complete piece of shit. Thank you, for taking the time to insinuate that. I'll strive to learn from your example in how to be a better person to strangers on the internet.
Zomg@piefed.world · -8 pts · 31d
Step 1, stop whining about shit on the internet to strangers, you'll be much happier. You can't control other people, you can control yourself and your attitude.
I see posts about your username, maybe start there if you're actually serious about being perceived positively.
Abyssian@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 31d
25% of your total Lemmy posts and comments over the last 3 days are you following me around.
I do admire the dedication, however I regrettably must inform you that after careful consideration I have decided to move forward with one of my other applicants, so the position for stalker is no longer available. I wish you luck in your future endeavors.
Zomg@piefed.world · -6 pts · 31d
And a year+ on just this account which is like what? Less than 0.01%? don't huff your own farts too hard bro.
calmblue75@lemmy.ml · 8 pts · 31d
Just as a bunch of other commenters on this thread, I too think that your post wasn't fitting to the community. But your post deserves only a downvote level of reaction. Removing post is overboard, but banning is definitely PTB.
eurodyne@piefed.world · 7 pts · 32d
Your ban is now permanent, btw.
You also seem to have 3 removed comments in the past month for “Trolling” and “Civility”
Abyssian@lemmy.world · -8 pts · 32d
It says 23 hours when I look at it in their log.
Yeah. Thanks for the helpful stalking. Apparently some people online are very bad at reading sarcasm and/or only permit jokes that they personally like. Seems like a far cry from advocating murder.
eurodyne@piefed.world · 5 pts · 32d
Odd, it shows as expires: never for me. Maybe it’s a quirk in my app.
JonsJava@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 31d
Looks like about 40 more minutes
WillStealYourUsername@piefed.blahaj.zone · 6 pts · 31d
But you are literally a bigot and a troll. Ban was deserved
Abyssian@lemmy.world · 0 pts · 31d
The world would likely be a much happier place for everyone if people took the time to actually get to know a person instead of assuming they're part of whatever group they like hating and immediately jumping to insults and treating others like shit.
velma@sh.itjust.works · 5 pts · 31d
I'll admit that we've had run-ins before where you were a complete ass. But I still don't think your post should have been removed from that news community the way it was.
Givessomefucks and Jonsjava are not the most judicial of mods. Best to avoid their communities and your experience here will be better for it.
Abyssian@lemmy.world · -5 pts · 31d
About 2/3 of my comment history is bad jokes, and I have a dark sense of humor. Some people aren't fond it. I try not to be a jackass to anyone, but getting jumped on for something people were very aware was a bad joke is frustrating.
People love to think of themselves as accepting and welcoming and caring, good people who treat people they're just meeting right... as long as those newcomers think and respond in the approved manner. A lot of people deal with trauma by developing a dark sense of humor. Even knowing someone is joking and having no idea the things that person has been through in life that might be behind them needing to joke about that topic, so many here jump to instant judgement and treating that person like shit.
It's about as far from welcoming, accepting, or even simply treating another human beings like a human being and not like some subhuman monster they feel justified in hating and shitting because it dared make a joke they weren't fond of.
velma@sh.itjust.works · 6 pts · 31d
Ehhh jokes have limits and you should know your audience.
But I’m still here defending you on the topic of this post. The culture here takes a little time to get used to - it’s different than Reddit and the like even though it seems similar on its face.
Give respect and, generally, you’ll receive respect.

Nah, bigots don't deserve nice things.
MysticMushroom1776@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 27d
YDM. You're a transphobic bigot. If you were on any other server they would've banned your home account for the shit you've spewed about queer people.
supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz · 1 pts · 29d
Lemmy.World is bad, avoid it and your experience will improve massively.
technocrit@lemmy.dbzer0.com · -1 pts · 31d
Oof. YDI.
velma@sh.itjust.works · 9 pts · 31d
OP has a point about other entertainment news being allowed previously.
Flatworm7591@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 3 pts · 31d
That's true, it is inconsistently applied. But Harry Potter posts are just bait on Lemmy. It's notable to me this is the hill OP is willing to die on.
dil@piefed.zip · 3 pts · 31d
Then wouldn't Nicholos Hoult taking a role in harry potter be news here because its controversial, clearly ppl have opinions on actors joining that franchise that are based in politics
dil@piefed.zip · 4 pts · 31d
My polisci teacher from years ago would tweak out about how literally everything is politics, everything is decided by politics, there is nothing that isn't political
Maeve@kbin.earth · 3 pts · 30d
That professor is correct.
velma@sh.itjust.works · 1 pts · 31d
The OP being a difficult user doesn't have much bearing if they follow the rules of the community when posting. The rules should clearly state if Harry Potter is a banned topic.
JonsJava@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 31d
I don't check every post in the community - not enough time in the day. If it's reported, I review. If not, it will likely fly under the radar
Abyssian@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 31d
"Only news on things I think is interesting matters."
Flatworm7591@lemmy.dbzer0.com · -2 pts · 31d
If you think that's newsworthy, I don't know what to tell ya. YDI, and it was no big deal. Are you just attention seeking at this stage or what?
Abyssian@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 31d
It's news? I like the actor. I'm fairly disappointed. I thought others might also have opinions they would like to share on this social media discussion platform.
There were several other posts on the News community about things like Firefly starting to make a new animated series, an actress giving her opinion on a movie, and multiple TMZ articles that really were celebrity gossip instead of news.
When you're relatively new to a place and mods seem to be deleting things and banning for no reason with no communication that's a bit odd. This community says it's the place to post such issues. Why would you accuse someone trying to use it for that of being attention seeking?
Flatworm7591@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 31d
Because there was no PTB behavior. If you want entertainment news, choose a different community. And anything Harry Potter related is honestly as toxic as fuck right now due to the author being a disgusting transphobe, so that's a red flag too tbh.
Abyssian@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 31d
News doesn't have lists of disallowed topics in their rules. There are posts from TMZ of all places posted on the community. And... weirdly everything in the comment you replied to addresses the things you just said.
Flatworm7591@lemmy.dbzer0.com · -1 pts · 31d
velma@sh.itjust.works · 6 pts · 31d
What about Nicholaus Holt being cast in a tv series makes it gossip? That’s a factual piece of information.
Flatworm7591@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 31d
Case closed then.
velma@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 31d
The community rules should be clearer, let's be honest here.
Abyssian@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 31d
Yes, I can read. News and gossip are not synonymous. And as I said before, it certainly looks like other similar news wasn't an issue.

But there is also some celebrity gossip on the community.
