I think they leave the hatch open for some weird reason, which is good if you want to shove an IED down there and make shrapnel bounce around the metal walls, turning the occupants into pink mist.
I'm thinking the New York Times doesn't want to use "capture" here because they think this conflict is "not of international character" as per Geneva conventions.
