Remember when COVID finally got recognized and the instructions were to shelter in place unless absolutely needed for a few months? There was a noticeable drop in carbon emissions and increases in air quality across the board.
Everything kind of paused, a simultaneous drop in major demands across the board, and the world healed a little.
Do it again at just the low low cost of pushing more people around the world into extreme poverty than has ever happened in the history of the world? A world that primarily has countries that have zero social safety nets and largely operate exclusively on ruthless capitalist terms?
Like yeah covid was this magical time if you were a mostly well off (globally) westerner that got handed free money and unemployment checks. Thats not quite what it was for most people around the world or for anyone that was already out of work at the time.
But yeah some trees were happy smh
We need long term systemic change. Not whiplash bullshit that has permanent knock on effects
I genuinely think we will have to start planting different vegetation now -- like different breeds of grass -- so that it doesn't all die during the summer like it is now.
It would need to be grass with very deep roots. This exists, but it afaik struggles to grow with the typical compacted soils we have due to decades of mechanized agriculture and groundwater depletion.
On the broader topic, the sad thing about planting trees is that it is super hard to find a species that will grow well now and still do well in 40+ years given the +4°C trajectory we are on. The change is happening too rapidly for long lived species like trees.

Sure but it will take 500+ years for them to reach the same size and age. And who knows what the climate will be like by then.
If they want to mitigate this for the time being, the best solution would be to consult an expert to design an appropriate irrigation scheme to bridge the trees through the drought.
Enjoy the huge old trees while they last. They are a product of a long, stable climate that may not return for a long, long time.

I'm very upset we haven't killed the bastards who did this yet. I wonder what other irreplaceable treasures we'll lose before its not considered too violent to punish the guilty. What we will lose on latency. If there will be anything or anyone left. In other words: hat justice even remains? Will we even take our own revenge, or just let them die out in their bunkers, decades after our skeletons have bleached and burned on the surface?

Younger trees are even more vulnerable to extreme heat because their root systems aren't as developed.
